Mavic’s new Allroad S Carbon wheelset has been released on the heels of a newly updated Cosmic SLR 45. While the latter still fits squarely into the road category, the former is ready to take it all on. With improved aerodynamics, a wider profile, and a 42mm depth, the Allroad S crosses from road to gravel with ease.

And it does so at a price point of less than $1,400.

Allroad S Carbon

Mavic has been steadily working toward modernizing the widths of their wheels, and the Allroad S Carbon wheels include a 25mm inner width, which allows for a wide range of tires, from 30mm to 64mm — the same as a 2.5 inch mountain bike tire.

Along with a 25mm inner width, the Allroad S wheels boast a 31mm outer width and a 42mm depth. The rims are engineered within an NACA profile and feature a smoother transition between the rim and tire, reducing micro-turbulence. Mavic spent time wind tunnel testing the Allroad S to minimize drag and increase crosswind stability.

Mavic utilizes its carbon adaptive layup process when manufacturing the Allroad S Carbon wheels. This process enables Mavic to utilize less carbon fiber in areas where the rims experience less stress, without compromising strength. The result is a more responsive and lighter hoop. Mavic claims weight savings of up to 70g per wheel.

The end result is a wheelset that weighs 1695g (785g front / 910g rear). While these certainly aren’t the lightest wheels hitting gravel roads, they also aren’t the most expensive by any means.

Hubs

The Allroad S Carbon wheels utilize Mavic’s Instant Drive 360 hubs, featuring a 40-tooth ratchet, which provides 9° of engagement. Both the hub body and axles are made of aluminum, with 12×100 spacing up front and 12×142 in the rear. The hubs feature sealed cartridge bearings, are only compatible with centerlock rotors, and accept HG-R or XDR freehub bodies (no word on availability of Micro Spline freehubs for Shimano 1x GRX drivetrains).

Spokes

Adding to the weight of the Allroad S wheels, but also helping keep the price down, are the spokes. Each wheel uses J-Bend, stainless steel spokes. While the wheels don’t use Mavic’s FORE process for spokes and nipples, the standard 24-drilled holes accomplish two things. One, it makes swapping and fixing spokes easier. Two, it also helps keep the price down.

Those decals were certainly a choice.

Wow these are realllllly heavy. Unclear on the warranty Mavic is providing. It says lifetime, but I have read that they don’t really offer competitive crash replacement.

I like the yellow on black Mavic logo. Very utilitarian, harkening back to Mavic’s early days.

You can get custom built wheels that are better in every way for about the same price.

Mavic wheels used to be a selling argument for bike manufacturers (special top end version with Mavic CrossMax or Helium/Ksyrium). And an easy choice for stores offering alternative/replacement wheels.

Remember that most cyclists hardly know anything about the tech side of things, and may be very hesitant to enter custom built territory.

Should have left the raised nipple beds that made the old AllRoads look so unique [at the time].

I have had issues with all of the Mavic wheels I’ve owned over the years. The support is basically non-existent.

BTLOS wheels cost almost half as much delivered to your door in the US, weigh less, and will be problem free for years with in house or bitex hubs and Pillar aero spokes.
And you can get them without holes in the rim bed for easy tubeless setup and maintenance.

There is 0 comparative upside to these Mavic wheels.
