Top-level, race-ready mountain bike shoes have gotten obscenely expensive. And, while some are pretty comfortable and ultralight, they’re also focused on the task and not great for rides below the redline.
Enter the new Northwave Razer, an XC shoe designed to handle the races and everything leading up to them, including the “off days” of just exploring new trails with friends.

Key features include:
- XC 10 sole (stiff, but also walkable)
- Dual-layer TPU upper (light, but also tough)
- X-Dial SLW3 closure system with velcro strap (easy, but also secure)
Northwave says they’re versatile enough for gravel randonnées to XC trails, weekend bikepacking trips to leisurely touring.

The Razer’s carbon fiber XC 10 sole has a stiffness index of 10 (on a scale up to 15). On the outside, TPU inserts between the tread blocks provide traction and protection.
The upper uses fabric eyelets for the X-Dial’s cable, letting it slide freely to prevent pressure points on the top of your foot. Northwave’s SLW3 dial makes micro adjustments easy thanks to a little release ratchet that pushes downward to loosen in single-click increments. Or lift it up for full release to take off your shoes. The dial is also easy to replace.
Reinforced toe and heel sections protect both shoe and rider from impacts and abrasions. A silicone lining on the heel prevents slipping while pedaling, and a mesh tongue and unlined forefoot enhance breathability.

Northwave has always been one of our favorites (check out our factory tour!), thanks to a great fit and generally low weights, even on their more adventure ready all-terrain shoes. These look up to the reputation, and they’re also very affordable at just $186.99 (€169.99).

Available now in three colors (plus a women-specific version) in sizes 36 to 48.
