Chris King 12mm front and 12x142 rear thru axle road bike hubs

Chris King has a new thru axle rear R45D hub to join the R45D front thru axle we spotted at NAHBS.

The front will only be available in 12mm for thru axles, and QR will remain in the line, too, using end caps to swap between the two. Likewise, the rear adds the axle ends to allow it to convert to 12×142 thru axle, so you can upgrade your current QR hubs if you get a new frame. Our guess is some Cielo bikes might be making the switch now that there are some house brand hubs to go with them!

Retail is TBD, available mid summer.

If you need the 15mm thru axle front, they recommend their ISO SD (small diameter) mountain bike hubs, which will add a 24 hole drilling to match up with some lower spoke count rims used for ‘cross and road.

So, both fronts will have 24, 28, and 32, and the SD still has a 36 hole option, too.

There’s also a 12×142 thru axle single speed hub, something they’ve had customers begging for for years. Also available this summer, either as a complete hub or an end cap kit to upfit existing hubs to thru axle.

Already have their espresso tamper? How ’bout some carefully curated coffee and espresso mug and saucer sets to go with them?

Awesome news. I can convert my ss hub to 142, and it’s only about 6 years late.

I would have given up many moons ago. Sometimes companies need to be able to respond to market trends more quickly.

All good stuff, but almost as important: where can I get those Chris King rim decals that are on the R45d wheelset?!

@Fatguy–c’mon now, part of the appeal of Chris King is that he doesn’t knee jerkingly respond to trends thats why guys like him and Paul Price are legendary and iconic.

Who makes an aftermarket 12mm thru-axle road fork?

Bummer about the lack of 15mm compatibility. That will make swapping my MTB and CX wheels more difficult in the future.

A 12mm front really? Is 15mm just too stiff, or too heavy, no it’s just that King wants to be like everyone else and have their own standard. Just what we don’t need one more “standard” Personally I need a 13.5mm because 12mm isn’t stiff enough but 15mm is just too much.

Good on CK for waiting before diving into the turbulent thru axle pool.
