Wheels Manufacturing’s latest bottom bracket conversions give you two more options for using modern cranksets on various frames.

The new BB30 Outboard Threaded unit lets you run a BB386EVO crankset in a BSA bottom bracket shell. You’ll need to run 386EVO cranks to have a long enough spindle, though, BB30 won’t work.

Below, the BBright is for the Cervelo’s 79mm wide BB shell and is a thread together design running a mix of their press-in (left side) and outboard (drive side) bottom bracket parts in a shell that threads together inside the frame.

Retail will range from $55 to about $125 depending on bearing type. Available June 2015.

The fact that these and all the other adaptors exist is damning evidence the industry needs to standardize for the benefit of the consumers and not their bottom line.

I have to respectfully disagree, Yancey. While all of the different styles of bottom brackets can make my head spin, it’s nice that there are options. We can argue for hours about whether new styles are truly meant to benefit the rider or fatten the wallets of the manufacturers, but truly “standardizing” bottom brackets stifles progression. I love and have had the fewest problems with good old threaded bottom brackets, and part of me wishes my frame or bike purchases weren’t dictated by that fact. But that’s where these adapters come into play.

I think the smart thing to do is dump the standard BB30 crank(at this point in cycling history). BB386 works on practically everything. For now, you can get away with buying BB386 cranks and you can know they’ll fit on other bikes for a while. Of course, you can also buy standard Shimano and SRAM cranks and you’re also set but I bet if they went to BB386, most manufacturers would simply stop selling frames that work with a 24mm spindle that’s 86mm wide.

Tolerances will always be an issue, tons of threaded frames need facing or the center of the BB can be slightly off to the right or left

Someone needs to put together and publish a visual guide that shows all the (current) iterations of bottom bracket styles and how they can be interchanged via the plethora of adapters. It is absolutely mind-boggling to wrap your head around what fits, what won’t and on what frame unless you are in the industry and work with these things every day.

Good infographics showing relative diameters and widths, as well as a basic compatibility chart.

We use this chart at the shop. Saves our butt all the time.

@vegan – The nice thing about 24mm spindles is that it is pretty hard to make a frame that they WON’T work on. They’re the smallest diameter and widest width. Going to a thinner spindle isn’t going to happen, and going to a frame wide enough to make them obsolete would make all other spindles obsolete as well. That means you can almost certainly come up with some adapter to make 24mm cranks work with any frame.

The BB conversions from Wheels Mfg, Praxis, et al should be voted as one of the best developments of the last few years in cycling.

Now I just need a way to run my Square Taper cranks on a PF30 frame.
