For the end of 2022, North Street Bags out of Portland, Oregon brought us their limited-edition Upcycled Collection. This collection of packs and panniers is made to order using repurposed material from tents and banners from some pretty iconic events.

The rugged outdoor fabrics were saved from the landfill and donated by event organizer giant, Life Time and bicycle component company SRAM. These fabrics were used in such events as the New York City Marathon, and the Leadville Race Series, as well as some running and mountain bike events in the Colorado Rockies and half marathons in Chicago and Miami.

This North St. line of packs is “slated to save over half a ton of waste from the landfill this year, including highly water-resistant vinyl and vinyl mesh ideal for recycled use“.

The North St. Upcycled collection includes three fabric options.

  • Synthetic Canvas similar to a lightweight Cordura, sourced from donated Life Time tent walls: Featured in the Pioneer 8 Hip Pack, Davis Daypack, and Micro Pannier
  • Sturdy, highly water resistant, and rugged vinyl made from donated Life Time and SRAM banners: Featured in the Gladstone Grocery Pannier
  • A flexible and breezy printed mesh from donated Life Time banners: North St.’s first all-mesh pannier bag made from a highly-durable vinyl screen – perfect for riders looking for a “lightweight, upcycled pannier with extra flow”.

The Upcycled Collection Includes:

It’s kind of cool because it creates a unique item. However, there is a trend in the outdoor industry to use recycled plastic. Its strange how the Happy Meal toy uses virgin materials and the $700 sleeping bag uses recycled materials. Hope you enjoyed my comment.
