From the Land of 10,000 Lakes comes some news out of Surly Bike‘s Intergalactic Headquarters: Their longtail cargo bike, the Big Dummy has gotten some new updates for 2023. Those include geo changes, new bags, more sizes, and a new color. But sadly, we also learn that this is the last planned production run of the cargo bike heavyweight champ.
As you may already know, Surly’s Big Dummy has been around since 2008, inspiring many people and companies to rethink their cargo needs. And if you wanted one for your own personal human hauling, cargo moving, or grocery getting… now is the time to do it.
Always clever with the names of their colors, Surly uses Bruised Ego Purple for the 2023 Big Dummy, a color we saw worn back in 2020 by the Surly Krampus. This color is available in either the complete bike or as a frameset.
With its 400lb (combined cargo and rider) weight limit, the Big Dummy can provide a pretty limitless cargo-carrying experience.
The frame and fork have clearance for 26″x 2.5″ tires with fenders using the included fender eyelets. You have all of the necessary water bottle/cargo cage mounts as well.
The Big Dummy Cargo bags that are included with the bike, are now redesigned for 2023, making them easier to use and install. Also, Surly says that the new bags are manufactured using select fabrics that are Bluesign-approved.
The new Big Dummy is spec’d with a trustworthy 1×9 microSHIFT Advent drivetrain, Surly ExtraTerresrial 26×2.5″ tires, and mechanical disc brakes in the Avid BB7 flavor.
