Kenny

Unless you are (or were) a bored shop rat that lived for running out of things to do just so you can click to see what “Bloggy”, better known as The Ghost of Jerry Reed, is poetically and often aimlessly rambling about on the Hawley Blog, you probably have no clue who he is. But trust me… he’s famous. If not for all things ‘cross, for how he could manhandle an up-right double bass. Hawley is a large bicycle, parts & accessories distributor based just outside Columbia, SC, that supplies shops with your cycling needs and Bloggy communicated all of the un-normalcy to the outside world for them. Well, he came in everyday and sat down like he owned the place… everyone was always too afraid to ask if he actually worked there. I had the pleasure of working with Bloggy, though I was not near as close as his lap partner “There Was Only One Chair” Adam Abramowicz (then office mate and now current co-founder of Kind Human Bicycles), his humor and presence was always as welcome as his well manicured locks, (kind of a washed version of a 90’s Johnny Depp’s).

Bloggy, (or Kenny to those he owes money to), has been through a shit storm having acquired an unwelcome and aggressive as hell colon cancer and is currently in hospice. Jamie, his lovely wife took the last year off of work to care for and be with Kenny, and her sister Jessica knowing they needed as much financial as moral support organized a crowd-funder to help them through this difficult time.

As I write this, his wife informed me a new chapter will soon arrive and that the already huge outpouring has been overwhelming. If not a few bucks, send them your thoughts on the Bloggy Fundraiser… especially if you were a fan.

Kenny is for all intents and purposes one of the most genuinely funny, intelligent and rad people I’ve ever had the pleasure to know. I was still at Hawley when he got the bad news. I remember he was having some pains while riding and it took a while for the doctors to figure it all out. A local rider recently recounted a story about Ken on a memorial ride, busting his ass, getting up and pulling a rock out of his leg, only to hop back on the bike, pouring blood to finish the ride. He is one tough mother and his three year fight has been an incredible show of his force. This world needs Ken and right now Ken needs the world. We’re all broke enough working in this business, no less to be unable to work, any amount helps. We’re all pulling for you Ken.

Oh, and there were more chairs. We just enjoyed each other a lot.

Damn. I hate to read this. The Ghost is consistently one of the funniest reads out there… and, unlike some people, he always manages it without language or crudeness. My thoughts are with you, dude.

It wasn’t that he crashed, and pulled a stone out of the side of his knee. It was the fact that the wound did not close! There was a hole, like he’d been attacked with a gnome-sized melon baller. Get a peanut M&M…hold it next to a fleshy part of your knee. That’s roughly the size of the hole. There might be pictures floating around…
And it was COLD…like 25 degrees cold. And we were a SOLID 90 minutes from the cars.
Dude is tough, and above all else, a quality human being!
