Titanium Retrotec is Likely First Pinion Gearbox Bike That Can Also Singlespeed

For many singlespeeders, the option to add a multi-geared drivetrain is a nice option when you need it. But what happens when you want that multi-geared option to be a Pinion gearbox? Apparently, you just have to get Curtis Inglis to make you a wild trellis-like Pinion-to-SS adapter. Simple.

OK, this adapter is anything but simple – but it’s certainly a thing of beauty. Utilizing the mounting points of the Pinion gearbox, the adapter simply positions a bottom bracket shell where it would be if the frame wasn’t built for a Pinion in the first place.

The back end has a swinging dropout for adjusting chain tension, and there is a split in the seat stay to allow for a belt drive for the gearbox.

In addition to the singlespeed adapter, the bike was also gaining a lot of attention for its anodized finish. The work of Agave Finishworks, the bike’s owner Robert asked Agave to finish the bike in the style of a classical Japanese silkscreen on parchment paper. You know, just your typical anodizing job.

Both Curtis and Agave Finishworks knocked it out of the park with this one.

 I want a titanium CoolTool.

Retrotech also did the first tire inserts, the popnots.

I still have my steel CoolTool but Bob Seals sold the cooltool to Gerber knives (I think) before he sold retrotec to Curtis.

Popnots are the first foam tire inserts I remember, but Mr Tuffy tire liners (puncture resistant insert) were around before popnots.
