On the one hand, you have Trek’s new online ordering and home delivery program (or shop delivery for complete bikes). Now, you can have the complete opposite, heading to Trek’s Waterloo, Wisconsin, headquarters to get fit for and customize you new bike, or even take it home with you a bit later.

The new Trek Factory Experience offers two ways to get your new Project One bike. Order through your local Trek dealer first, then head to their HQ for a VIP tour and meet ‘n’ greet with the folks that build your frame, onsite lunch and lunch ride, and packing of your bike in a new Scicon bike bag for the trip home.

The second option includes a visit to their shop for a professional fit and guided Project One customization process, plus all the VIP tour, development team meeting, lunch and ride, then your bike is packed and shipped to your dealer once it’s ready. It’s all arranged through their Trek Travel program.

Buy a frame and add air miles with your purchase.

“and meet ‘n’ greet with the folks that build your frame”

How many frames are still being built in Waterloo? Last I checked, it was only the OCLV 700 series Madones.

I’d be interested to hear an answer to that, too, John. All they’d have to do is some bonding together of tubes made overseas to “make the frame” in Waterloo.

Sweet. The mass merchandise/straight off the shelf experience masquerading as the one you’d get when working with a custom framebuilder. Instant gratification for the seeker of mediocrity.
What WILL the braniacs of Trek think of next?
Oh, and even better…you don’t have to go to the local bike shop.

John: I think Trek’s domestic production is orders of magnitude greater than its major North American competitors put together. Probably more than most if not all independent American builders, too.

Trek’s Factory Experience would basically be like the people who made pilgrimages to Saratoga for a Serotta fitting, except in BFE southeastern Wisconsin.

Only a very small percentage of Trek frames are made in the USA, but Trek still makes the most USA made frames of any company.

They build the frames from carbon sheets that come in on a refrigerated truck from Utah. I was there two years ago. Thee head engineer said they have two weeks to use the carbon sheets before it not any good. It’s actually pretty interesting

40,000 per year built in Waterloo.

Session made in Waterloo yet not available as Project One. Lame. More mtb options please. Some of us don’t like aluminum fuel EX’s.

Just an fyi, Domane’s, Fuel’s, Emonda’s, Session’s, Superfly/Top Fuel, and Madone 700 series top end bike are made in Wisconsin. The 9.9 or equivalent versions that is… they make all their bikes sections at a time. Almost no monocoque construction at all. They have much more controll over eliminating voids. Chop a trek frame across a tube and do it to any competitor brand and You will see the difference. The OCLV is purely a technique. But it works… As a ME that also studied material sciences trek is one of the few companies that ive worked on bikes for that really gets carbon. I have yet to be there but I get to talk to the carbon guys enough to know the truth of what they do and don’t do. Also going to the hq is unlike any other companies hq. Specialized doesn’t have their own hotel…

volkswagen does this in wolfsburg, and it’s a big success. interesting move by trek.

treks factory indeed is a mindblowing experience, and if you really have the chance to speak with the likes that engineer and build the frames that would be quite unique. too bad you can’t take pics of everything 🙂

Emonda SLR frames are Waterloo built as well.

Volvo does a similar thing as well. Seems like a great experience for buyers.

Thanks for putting a number on it, Sanchez. And no, Champ, that’s not more than everyone else combined.
“Domestic production of bicycles in the U.S. is estimated at approximately 200,000 units.” http://nbda.com/articles/industry-overview-2014-pg34.htm

@Champs: “think Trek’s domestic production is orders of magnitude greater than its major North American competitors put together.”

Made in USA, when it comes to bikes, is a bunch of nostalgic, jingoistic remnants of a bygone era.

I mean, are you really going to proudly prop the flag up on your Chevy on your way to pick up said “Made in USA” Trek when 90% of its components are made overseas?

Take a look at your “American” Chevy’s sticker and you’ll see about 20% of the car is sourced domestically.

Plus, carbon made in Taiwan is way better than anything made here. “Made in USA” stickers make us forget about the inferior quality of the product underneath.

@Turbo jenkins “Carbon made in taiwan is better than anything made here.” Wow interesting. You sound like a real carbon fiber expert!

They only make their reminds slr and 7series madone in Wisconsin. The other high end bikes aren’t made there.

Emonda not reminds. Stupid auto correct

@Cheese
Estimates are all over the place. CNBC reported that Trek made 20-25k out of 56k total US made frames in 2014.

Perhaps US made things are nostalgic and jingoistic for you, Turbo, but for those of us who actually earn a living making things it’s called a career, not jingoism. And could you please tell me which Chevy you drive which has 80% imported content?

am I the only one who thinks this is cool to even OFFER it? Those of you who think it’s silly likely aren’t in the market for a high end Project One back anyways. But for those people with bigger bank accounts than me, why not give them the same experience as Corvette, BMW, Buell, etc?

@Dominicadl: Thanks for that update. My sole experience with this was last year when I was in the process of ordering a Project One six-series Domane, I was told “only the custom paint and final assembly” would take place in Wisconsin — and opted for a production floor model from my local Trek dealer instead.

Turbo, you lost me at “carbon made in Taiwan is better than anything made here”. Talk about pulling something out of your you-know-where. Got any “facts” to back that statement up? Of course you don’t, that is not a quantifiable fact, it’s called your opinion.

boom, spot on. Trek still is a 4-letter bad word to many jaded people, and they will find any reason to bash the company, even without any merit. I’m sure if Trek donated bikes to charity, people would still make snarky remarks.
