Give it a second (or three) to load, sit through their ad and you’ll see Giant Bicycles CEO Tony Lo tell Bloomberg what he thinks is the future of cycling. Or, if the numbers are accurate, at least part of it…we’re pretty sure the world’s population isn’t 80%+ women. Yet. And then check the source link for an explanation of the video that has absolutely nothing to do with what he actually says.

He doesn’t claim that 80% are women. He says that if you skew out those below 5 and above 80 only 18% ride bikes, that leave 82% of the population, regardless of sex. He later says in reference to the industry erroneously thinking that they have already served them, that ‘half the population is women’. (2:13)

Makes the last line more than ironic. FWIW I don’t work for or have any affiliation to Giant.

He’s not saying that the world is 80%+ women, he’s saying that 82% of the population aren’t riding bikes. Of that 82%, he thinks that women wanting to ride something other than cruisers is a (sizable?) chunk.

Now if only they would make a carbon women’s cross bike. I guess having multiple world champions isn’t enough to warrant it, but the market can somehow carry an $8k mtb.

Is Tony Lo intoxicated? He’s a missionary who’s worried about being out of a job because no one has provided him with an innovation upon which to improve…enter the Total Cycling Solution, which has something to do with convincing more women that they need $8k rainbow-colored carbon fiber time trial bikes, for they should also be ‘lady.’ The source link promises that Lo will be asked what’s next. A: Total Cycling Solution. Tony had not yet read Overholt’s current post, so he doesn’t know that cycling might not be good for everything, i.e. brachial plexus. I’d like to see an article from Benedict which manages to at once explain his view on the future of human sex ratio and be a tour de force of product marketing. Magura long brake lever with ball, can it actually help prevent injuries to women’s brachial plexi? Check out Giant’s new women’s specific downhill bike, the Afterlife. Total Cycling Solution! Or you could get a custom ladybike from Waltworks for well under $8k, right there in the City of parks….

I like Tony Lo. I’ve met dudes like him in various industries and you know d*mn well that his vision-quest style musings are actually backed up by a hell of a lot of experience, research, and insight. Also, I agree with Dan, more interviews with CEOs – always enlightening
