The first big round of software updates is arriving for the Wahoo KICKR ROLLR. The ROLLR is Wahoo’s hybrid roller/smart trainer. Its billed as an entry-level trainer in the Wahoo universe, but it’s slightly more than that. Its easy setup design and quick on/off bike install makes it appealing to riders of all ability levels. Though it has some room for improvement, the KICKR ROLLR is still one of the easiest trainers set up. Wahoo is quickly working to get this hybrid up to speed with the growing indoor arms race. They hope the new addition of onboard power will give riders the extra tools they need to stay motivated, and keep riding.

What is the KICKR ROLLR?
The KICKR ROLLR is Wahoo’s hybrid roller/smart trainer. The Wahoo ROLLR hangs its hat on having a super quick and easy setup. The rider only needs to attach the front wheel (via wheel clamp, no need to remove anything) and align the rear wheel on the roller. The other, less mechanical setup features are resistance control, speed, and distance. These are also just as easy to set up with the Wahoo companion app.

Why rollers? The resistance unit is a dual set of mini rollers that offer a free-moving rear wheel mimicking the feel of outdoor riding and rear wheel float. It allows the rider to have free movement of the rear end (to a point) and have the ease of not removing wheels or additional gear (cassettes, spacers, etc.) for a quick setup.

How About That Power?
The Wahoo KICKR ROLL does have some shortcomings. Up until this update, the lack of direct power stuck out like a sore thumb. The ROLLR unit would connect to ANT+ power meters and piggyback off of them, but would only measure speed and distance itself. Up unil now, it was a BYOPM (bring your own power meter) party for any power and cadence data collection on your ride.

That aside, the other short comings are nitpicky for me and how I’d like to use the KICKR ROLLR. Yes, the unit offers quick set up and progressive resistance (around 250W) without being connected to a power source. However, it would be a standout warm-up trainer at races if it were easier to move and level. To move the trainer (I tried to move mine for a super cool pre-race setup), you have to disconnect the sliding fork piece and awkwardly move the unit. The fork attachment piece is large, and it would be a huge asset if it could colapse into a smaller package. This pre-race warm up use isn’t something that Wahoo billed the unit for but it would have been nice. Like a super cool dual-duty Feed Back Omium trainer.

KICKR ROLLR What’s New?
