New parts and bikes often require new tools. With the hopes of making your bike wrenching easier and smoother, Wheels MFG has added two new tools to its shop-grade tool line. If you run the new Shimano 12-speed compact cassette with the 9t lockring, you know you need a special tool to install and remove the cassette. This tool isn’t like anything you may have lying around the bench. Wheels MFG’s XTR (and XT) style 9T Cassette Lockring tool is designed specifically for the Shimano 9T lockring’s unique profile. Note that you only need this tool if you’re running one of the new compact Shimano cassettes with the 9t cog. For all other Shimano MTB cassettes, including those for the new Di2 groups that aren’t compact, you still use the standard HG splined cassette tool.

It can deliver both accuracy and security to properly install the 9T lockring to torque specs without fear of slipping and damaging expensive parts. The new tool is built using “heavy-duty aluminum” and engineered to hold up to repeated use.

Tool Highlights:

  • Custom fit for Shimano style XTR 12-speed 9T lockrings
  • Prevents rounding or damage by locking in cleanly and securely
  • Made from durable aluminum for professional longevity
  • A must-have addition to any mechanic’s toolkit
  • Works with a 3/8″ drive for easy use with common shop tools
  • Use with a standard box-end wrench for leverage (not included)

When servicing the front sprocket on a Pinion Gearbox, you’re going to need the right tool. And, you guessed it, the new Wheels MFG Pinion Gearbox 8-Pin Lockring Socket is the tool you need. It’s purpose-built to be a perfect interface with the Pinion’s 8-pin lockring. Using it makes swapping sprockets easy, straightforward, and secure.

The new tool is machined from lightweight 6061 aluminum. It’s also sports stainless steel pins, balancing durability with precision. It’s designed with a 1/2″ drive, so it pairs perfectly with your standard shop tools.

Tool Highlights:

  • Purpose-built for Pinion gearbox front sprocket servicing
  • 8-pin engagement for a secure, slip-free fit
  • CNC-machined 6061 aluminum body with stainless steel pins
  • Works with a 1/2″ drive for easy use with common shop tools
  • Designed for professional mechanics and serious home builders alike

Seems confused about the materials: “the new tool is built using “heavy-duty aluminum””. …but “Made from durable steel for professional longevity”. Not exactly reliable information.

I don’t disagree with your point but using a softer/similar metal tool to prevent physical or cosmetic damage is a viable reason for aluminum.

Good catch. We reached out to Wheels MFG since their website also listed both materials, and they confirmed it is made from aluminum.
