Wilier has a new carbon Filante Hybrid aero road e-bike that neatly integrates an all-new Mahle X20 motor, resetting the benchmark as the world’s lightest e-bike drive system. Combining classic Wilier Triestina’s road bike feel & handling with the smooth support of the tiny Mahle X20 rear hub motor and an expandable 236Wh battery hidden in the downtube, the new Filante Hybrid e-bike can extend your road & all-road rides without feeling like you are weighed down on a bulky e-bike.
Wilier Filante Hybrid stealthy road e-bike
The new Wilier Filante Hybrid road e-bike doesn’t actually look like an e-bike, doesn’t really feel like you are riding an e-bike, or weigh a lot like most e-bikes. Even lighter than its similar Cento10 Hybrid predecessor, this new Filante Hybrid can be built up to push closer to the 10kg/22lb weight threshold, giving it a real shot at the title of world’s lightest e-road bike.
All-new world’s lightest Mahle X20 e-bike powertrain
Much of the secret to the new Filante Hybrid’s improvement comes down to the all-new made-in-Slovenia Mahle X20 hub motor e-bike drive system. With a complete powertrain system weight of around 3.2kg according to Mahle, that’s almost a 10% weight savings while still outputting the same 250W of power at reduced an increased torque output for a more natural road riding feel, that Wilier compares to 60Nm of torque from a mid-drive motor (Mahle calls it 55Nm equivalent).
This new smaller-diameter X20 rear hub motor system also moves to a 12mm thru-axle standard, wire-free no-hassle wheel mounting thanks to a self-aligning dropout plug, and interchangeable freehub bodies for improved drivetrain compatibility. It still works with both a standard 236Wh internal battery and external 172Wh Range Extender bottle battery (both scaled down a hair from the X35 system).
The new X20 system also gets improved bottom bracket toque sensors to more smoothly ramp up power to match rider input. And on this new Wilier, it neatly integrates the iWoc head unit controller into a one-piece carbon cockpit, and mounts a new ANT+ Pulsar One cycling computer out front to track your rides, power, heart rate data, and communicate all the e-system power data.
Range on these lightweight e-road bikes varies widely on how you ride them. But since you’ll likely spend most of your time riding above the EU 25km/hr cut-off, Wilier expects the X20 setup with just the internal battery will provide support for 100km rolling rides on the new Filante Hybrid, extending that out beyond 150km with the Extended Range battery. Of course, rider weight, support mode, road surface & amount of climbing elevation can have a big impact on real-world range.
But I’ve gotten more than 165km/1400m out of a gravel X35 setup with 250+208Wh battery over rough terrain. So I suspect Wilier’s estimates are conservative for fast-paced riding.
Mahle is now claiming a range of up to 140km on the internal battery, or 200km with the Range Extender battery combo.
Filante Hybrid aero all-road – Tech Details
The Wilier Filante Hybrid is meant to be an “electric racing bike” so it combines a lot of aero road bike optimization from the standard Filante SLR, including aerodynamically shaped carbon tubing, wide-set fork legs & dropper seatstays, a small rear wheel cutout, one-piece integrated carbon bar+stem cockpit, fully-internal cable routing, and proprietary aero carbon seatpost with hidden clamp.
The move to 12mm thru-axle compatibility and an automatically-mating power plug at the dropout makes changing tires (or flat tires) much more user-friendly vs. the previous bolt-on, wired Mahle/eBikeMotion hub motors.
And after moving all the cables fully internal, integrating the simple color-coded Mahle mode controller into Wilier’s custom carbon cockpit makes for the nicest-looking e-bike control setup I’ve ever ridden – not to mention super smooth power delivery with the new BB torque & cadence sensor paring.
Endurance road to all-road geometry
The Filante Hybrid also leans a bit towards all-road so it gets slightly bigger 32mm tire clearance for more comfort & control. And it gets 1/2° slacker, shorter Reach & taller Stack endurance geometry compared to the Filante SLR (just like the previous Cento10 Hybrid.)
The new performance road e-bike also adds two more sizes to fit a wider range of riders, now six sizes – XS-XXL.
