INTERBIKE 2009 – SRAM debuted three new road bike wheels, all with aluminum rims, that borrow heavily from their partnership with Zipp while being designed and built by SRAM.
All three feature aluminum rims and cover the range from training to racing performance and pricing:
- S30 AL Race – $950 – 1430g (645g front / 785g rear)
- S30 AL Sprint – $690 – 1495g (680g front / 815g rear)
- S27 AL Comp – $450 – 1620g (735g front / 885g rear)
The Race and Sprint wheels use a torroidal shaped rim profile borrowed from their SRAM/ZIPP carbon wheels to improve aerodynamics.  The Comp has a v-shaped rim profile, too, and at a quick glance they’re not too disimilar.  SRAM says they’re going directly after Mavic by launching an aluminum wheelset line.

The S30 Sprint gets bladed spokes and is built a little stronger than the race to accommodate more powerful riders.  The shiny black rims on the two S30 models have a treatment called Black Diamond and it’s very glossy in person.

All three wheelsets use the same 18 front / 20 rear spoke pattern, but the quality and shapes of the spokes vary between models.
The S27 gets a more matte black surface treatment.  The “27” refers to the rim depth in mm, same with the S30’s.
The S30 Race uses Sapim CX Rays spokes with internal aluminum nipples.
