wtb resolute 42 gravel road bike tires for all weather conditions

If you’re planning that epic adventure ride that combines mixed surfaces, the likelihood of mixed weather, and goodness knows what else, tire selection becomes one of those things that keep you up at night. WTB’s trying to calm that monkey mind a bit with the new Resolute 42, a new tire with low knob height and well spaced blocks to work on anything you ride over. Or through…

The Resolute 42 comes in 700c and 650b sizes, both at 42mm wide, and is designed for use on rims with 23mm internal width. They say that combination provides the optimal tire profile, sidewall support and traction.

Claimed weights and prices are 460g / $54.95 for 700c, and 440g / $51.95 for 650b. The side knobs are buttressed, and others are ramped, with an overall knob height that helps keep them rolling fast while still being able to grab mixed surfaces. Center knobs use a 1-2-1-2 pattern with tighter spacing, then the rest get more spread out and offset to clear the muck.

Both sizes only come in their Fast & Light casing for now, both with tan sidewalls, and are (of course) tubeless ready.

“at 42mm wide, and is designed for use on rims with 23mm internal width. They say that combination provides the optimal tire profile, sidewall support and traction”

Then shows picture of them on a 25mm internal rim, hahaha.

Hi Aero King, Heather from WTB here. The Resolute from WTB was designed around an i23 rim. Have a great one!

Heather from WTB, give Resolute, Byway, and Horizon a blackwall option, and offer your rims in more hole counts than 32 (one 28) then I be your biggest fan!

When you say designed around 23 internal, what exactly do you mean?

I’m running 40mm tyres currently on 21mm internal and really suffering for sidewall support at the pressures I want to run. I’m seriously considering moving to 30mm internal rims to give me the lateral support I’m looking for through the corners without compromising pressure.

What impact would the “designed around i23” have if one were to run these on a much wider rim?

Tire pressures and squirm are a personal thing based on tire/rim interface, weight, how you ride and the terrain you ride. The recommended rim with is just a starting point.

It’s ok. Because +/- 2mm makes FA difference. IE designed for, not exclusive to.

Gotta agree with Rapha…. Bruce Gordon Rock and Road is the best I’ve tried. This tread pattern looks good for MTBish stuff, but it looks like it’ll also be loud and rumbly on pavement with iffy traction on hard surfaces at high lean angles. Nice try guys, but you need something more like a center rib and more rounded shoulder blocks. I’d be afraid to corner hard on this unless I was on loamy soil.

Haha!! A critique based solely on speculation. Heather would not approve.

How does this compare to the Riddler?

It’s a different tread, size, color, weight, and name.

Thanks for the help! But funny none the less. I’m on a Riddler 45 so the size is similar. I see the different tread pattern but in my inexperience, I can’t quite tell which is more aggressive. WTB was great to work with when I had a problem this year, but they are sorely lacking when it comes to a comparison tool. For example, both say fast rolling and gravel. Is one more biased for mud, is one fastER rolling on pavement, better protection?

I’d say this is more for mud. The knobs look bigger too so treadwise it may not roll quite as well on hardpack or pavement. A huge chunk of rolling resistance is the type of rubber used, and I don’t know if they’re the same rubbers or not.

Happiness is a boatload of tires. I’m personally most interested in these and the new 700x48c Soma Supple Vitesse slicks due out late summer.

^^ Looks like lighter casing and maybe 40-50 grams heavier than riddler IIRC. Riddler is a great tire. rides and rolls well. This tire looks to be a big step up in outright off road traction though. will ride better too.

Interested in how WTB would compare this to their beloved nano40. This looks great but I hope the nano sticks around

It looks like it can take a corner without sliding out.

the nano 40s are fun but I ditched them after a 400-500 miles. they’re just too chunky and heavy for a 40mm tire. the weight is just shy of that of 2.1-2.2 XC tires. I went with something better for road/dirt, schwalbe g-one

That tire looks a lot like the second generation racing Ralph. I dig that tire, bet it’s great 10 ‘c’ wider!

Once you are in proper dirt black or tan wall tires really look the same. Are you riding exclusively in your living room. I think slick tires would be more appropriate for that environment.
