Fizik saddle custom program lets you build your own saddle

New custom build program from Fizik offers “your saddle, made personal.”

It lets you choose cover material, color, base material, rail material and the color of the accent pieces. And, they make it all available to do online in a configurator that works on desktop or mobile. Yep, it’s a great way to kill time a work making your next saddle match your bike and kit perfectly…

With typical Italian flair, it goes well beyond just choosing between blue or red or green. No, you have multiple shades, tones and shines to choose from within each hue’s range.

The process walks you through each step, and on some models you can choose a different color and material for each panel of the saddle. It’s available for the Arione, Antares, Aliante, Gobi, Tundra, Vesta, Donna and Arione Tri. Expect about a 20-30% upcharge over normal retail.

The base material can be a fiberglass blend (more flexible) or straight carbon fiber (stiffer). The only thing you can’t pick is the type of foam, as they specify different density and type based on the saddle shape. Add in Ki:um (chromoly) or carbon rails and then it gets put together in Fizik’s Italian factory.

When they first started testing the program, lead times were pretty short, but they’re growing a bit as popularity grows…which is why they really haven’t announced it until now. They didn’t want to promise two week turnarounds if it would take longer than that, and it’s looking like it’ll take a bit longer than that…since, you know, everything’s made by hand in Italy. Like all that excess material on the saddle cover above – it’ll get trimmed with a blade once the glue has fully cured. That’s the main reason why they aren’t likely to offer this customization on their shoes, since those are made elsewhere.

Shop owners: They’ve recently revamped their handlebar tape’s retail packaging to be more shelf friendly and better present the products’ color and texture. As of this post, if you’re ordering through a distributor other than Highway Two in the U.S., you may get old packaging until they’ve sold through.

Very cool, I wish others would do this. Although I realize everyone has a slightly different anatomy, every fizik saddle I’ve ever ridden was an a** hatchet.

How exactly does the purchase of the custom items work? Consumer direct? Through shops? Distributors? If I purchase on their site, do they’d till run the saddle through highway 2, a local shop, en to me?

Great idea, now how about the execution?

@Thesteve4761 they’ve always run this consumer direct from the factory in Italy (was buying custom saddles this way from them about 15 years ago now). They might be doing it through shops as well now but direct makes the most sense.

Well, I’ve tried four of their models and found none to be “a** hatchets…” I could ride any of them, and for long distances. But the Aliante VS happened to fit best.
My gripes are two: first, this program doesn’t cover the Versus saddle range, even though a Versus is shown in the picture. Fizik is oddly neglectful of the Versus saddles, always slow to update them, offering them sometimes only in colors that have appeal only to a limited market etc. They just drag their feet changing and updating them.
We’re talking about all of their saddles with relief channels here. All of them.
It’s like whoever is in charge of the company agreed only reluctantly to offer saddles with cutouts and is now resentful of having to deal with the entire line.

2) I wish they’d lose this silly “Bull” and “Snake” thing. It’s not really intuitive what they are trying to get at with it, and is just confusing from a marketing standpoint. Feels like trying to pick a saddle off one of those paper placemats in a Chinese restaurant.
“Hmmmm, guess it’s the year of the Saddle made for Chicken!”

If its all done direct, how does this help shops and dealers who have been loyal to Fizik for years? Its tough enough with cheap online stores and this all just adds to it.

Bull and Snake is no different than the “scientific sounding” Body Geometry and every other marketing hook. All saddles created since nearly the dawn of saddle time have been based on the same basic science: the shape of your backside. Sure we get widths and other things now, but look at the Brooks saddles that has such a fan base…..a patch of leather stretched across some steel. So there goes science out the window.

Look past the Bulls and Snakes and buy what works for you. Let the company marketing go untouched and just ride what makes you comfy. We need sales in this industry to drive innovation and allow custom programs to be launched, and if someone thinks they’re a Bull and buys a new saddle, well, then part of the system worked.

BigBenny, I HAVE looked past the Bull and Snake to the actual product. I ride Fizik exclusively, and am just shy of a fanboy bout their products.
But the Bull and Snake I found to be an actual impediment to understanding the product. I’m saying their marketing needs to be smarter. That’s second-rate stuff.
It’s not exactly comparable to Body Geometry, which is just a buzzword and doesn’t delineate differences in models… or try to, which is what the Bull uh, stuff, purports to do.

That’s a minor complaint. The bigger one is their puzzling behavior as regards their lines of channeled saddles. They need to take them a bit more seriously.
