Giro101 Tech: Cervelo R5 & S5 race bikes of Team Dimension Data

The Giro d’Italia is about to get underway, and we are scouting pro bikes in Jerusalem ahead of the first Grand Tour ever to start outside of Europe. Team Dimension Data‘s Cervélo race bikes were on of the first we’ve uncovered on the ground in Israel. So we took a close look at what the pros are running…

The team will be racing on a mix of the latest Cervélo R5 lightweight road bikes that were updated last summer…

Dimension Data Cervélo S5 carbon aero road bikes

…and the more aerodynamic Cervélo S5 aero road bikes, like we’ve seen the team racing for a few years.

Pro Team Bike Builds

The team is sponsored by Rotor and is using their 2InPower power meter cranksets, with a mix of their elliptical Q-rings and regular round NoQ chainrings.

But they are not riding Rotor’s full Uno drivetrain, instead rolling Shimano Di2 with gold KMC SL chains, and Dura-Ace pedals.

Interestingly though, some of the Dimension Data riders are using Rotor’s lightweight machined steel cassettes with their two machined alloy big cogs, especially on the TT bikes. While most others are on standard Shimano cassettes.

Team sponsor ENVE covers both SES wheels and carbon cockpits (and out-front GPS mounts), with the R5 bikes getting an unbranded aero seatpost.

Chris King provides a mix of black or matte green hubs. Tires are tried-and-true Continental Pro LTD pro-only tubulars.

Jerusalem Transfers

Beyond the standard R5 & S5, the Cervélo P3 & P5 time trial bikes were stuffed in the team van as well. With a race start so far from home for the European based teams, every team is stuffing all of their gear into these blank box trucks for transfers. No pimped out pro vans for the mechanics to work out of, at least until they get back to Italy for stage 4.
