Huffy is making a hard charge at the BMX segment (again) with its HX Pro BMX Race Bike. The bike comes in at under $200, which is great for the budding BMX’er in your life. But it rocks real race geo, a rear chain tensioner, a sealed Euro cartridge bottom bracket, and even a three-piece crankset with 44/16 race-ready gearing. Pretty kick-ass for the price.

I said “again” earlier because there was another time, long, long ago, where Huffy spent some real time and money in the BMX space. If I recall correctly, it was back in the mid-nineties that Huffy made a big push to be taken seriously in the BMX world.

They even had a BMX team chock-full of some heavy-hitting pros from the scene. Names like Todd Lyons, Cory Nastazio, Jimmy Levan, Scott Toth, and Randy Stumphauser were all wearing the Huffy BMX Team jersey.

Well, it looks like they might be trying it again…

Although initially released back in 2001, the Huffy HX Pro BMX Race Bike still looks pretty legit. With modern BMX geometry, and good-looking graphics.

It’s got some nice details you wouldn’t expect at the price point, like an internal headset and a cool looking hourglass head tube.

Huffy says it’s ready to race right out of the box, and is built to grow with riders of all ages and skill levels. The frame is made with 6061 aluminum, so the frame is strong and light.

Huffy spec’d the HX Pro with a proper 175mm three-piece crankset and 44/16 gearing, so smooth pedaling ensures efficient power is transferred to the rear wheel. The sealed cartridge bottom bracket means low maintenance and high durability. The HX Pro stops with “V” brakes, meaning you get dependable, powerful stopping power for total control on the track.

We feel you Brad. There’s been some issues with one of the current ad platforms our parent company uses, and it will be switching over soon which should improve the user experience. Thanks for reading.

So, it would be nice to compare this Huffy to an SE and see who comes out on top. SE is not the SE it originally was and Huffy is trying not to be the Huify it originally was. I think this is actually Huffy’s third go at being legit. I remember the mid 90s attempt, but there was also an 80s race team with bikes that must have been built by someone else wearing Huffy stickers. I’ll dawdle around on the BMX Museum to jog the memory.

The 80’s road bikes were all Serottas.

$200 for a track ready bike like this is a super value, and the video is cool. Almost any kid could think ‘I can do that’ after watching it. I vaguely remember Huf’s 90’s attempt. The models were a higher level. With GT gone, maybe Huffy can build a BMX core and grow it this round.

That’s what it’s all about, getting kids outside and into bmx. Even if kids don’t want to race, they still have a decent upgradeable bike to start out on. Heck, i started on a Huffy Pro Lightning when I was 12.

This is awesome. Applause for thoughtfully addressing the true needs of a BMX novice on a tight budget. Seems like 400-500 is the floor for mainstream brands lower-tier race ready rigs, sub $200 might be fresh air for aspiring racers gatekept by that barrier to entry.

I thinks it’s the coolest thing ever I picked up an HX 24 inch frame. It was very light so I prepped and painted it a bitchin matte orange. I had some 26 inch black Area rims that I laced some nice black GT hubs with the tear drops around the outer flanges. Yes 26 inch rims fit with some low profile tires. I put nice set of two piece Salt cranks Salt neck and Salt bars it turned out really cool and light I loved riding that bike it road so nice with those rims and everyone asked about it. I had it for 1 week and someone cut the lock and stole it rite off my truck in front of the police station.
