Marin Bikes makes a wide range of bikes for all types of riding. While the brand may be better known for its mountain bikes, Marin produces a variety of affordable city bikes, townies, and commuters, too. The Muirwoods has been a staple in the brand’s urban/commuter lineup for several years as a no-nonsense, rigid steel-framed, flat-bar, 700c city bike. Just recently, Marin introduced a 27.5” wheeled version of Muirwoods, expanding its surface versatility and opening the door for more shenanigans on your commute.

According to Marin: “With sturdy 27.5-inch wheels and 2.35-inch fast rolling tires, you can hop off curbs, drop stair sets, or even sneak a lap of the skate park in on your way to work, or whatever for that matter.” That certainly sounds appealing, and the new bike looks like it’s perfectly capable of navigating the urban jungle and handling any detour you want to take along the way. Let’s check it out.

Marin Muirwoods 27.5 Details

The new 27.5-inch Muirwoods shares the same classic silhouette as its larger wheeled sibling. The frame is made with Series 1 4130 CrMo steel, which they refer to as “Steezy Butted CrMo”. It has been designed around 27.5-inch wheels and reportedly has clearance for tires up to 2.8” wide. In typical Marin fashion, the Muirwoods has a wealth of bottle, accessory, fender, and rack mounts on the frame and fork. It comes in four sizes, S to XL, and is currently only offered in a blingy gold color.

Geometry

According to the geometry chart, the Muirwoods 27.5 has an identical geometry to the 700c version. The numbers are pretty typical of a rigid, flat-bar city bike, although the 67.5-degree head tube angle sets it apart from many dedicated commuter rigs. Otherwise, the numbers aren’t creeping into full-on mountain bike territory. Based on the pictures, the geometry and flat handlebar setup appear to put riders into a pretty neutral riding position that looks ready to rip through downtown and won’t feel out of place blasting through trails in the park on the way home.
