Initially released in 1995, the Smith Sliders were ready to change the game, and they did. In the process, becoming possibly one of the most iconic sunglasses from the past. Now, decades later, they’re back, bold as ever, and bringing with them modern updates.

The technology that was patented by Smith back in the 90s was something new to the world of sunglasses. The Sliders brought a flexible frame with interchangeable lenses.

They worked perfectly; you could easily slide lenses in and out, and the lenses were held securely to the frame during heavy use. Additionally, they came with three different lenses, essentially providing three pairs of quality sunglasses for the price of one.

People who spent a lot of time outdoors seemed to fall in love with them; outdoor guides, climbers, hikers, and cyclists all wore them. The combination of the interchangeable lenses and the sleek, wrapped silhouette made them very popular.

Smith says the tech behind the Sliders became the “blueprint for future innovation”. Eyewear with interchangeable lenses, like the Smith Pivlock and MAG, both owe a nod to the Sliders.

The New Sliders

The new Sliders are now upgraded with Smith’s ChromaPop. ChromaPop is a lens technology that enhances color, clarity, and definition by filtering out color wavelength crossovers.

The included interchangeable lenses come with a custom archive storage pouch that utilizes built-in lens pockets. The new Sliders now also include upgraded Megol nose and temple pads, to keep the glasses on your noggin’ even during the hardest efforts.

I have a couple pair of these from that era when my team was sponsored by Smith. These were great glasses and great to see them return. Maybe I’ll start using them again!

I had a pair to0 but unfortunately crushed them by accident when I had left them on the bed. They were red metallic and it really was a great pair of glasses.
