For the first time in more than a decade adidas is back in the cycling shoe game with their creatively-named “The Road Cycling Shoes”. Woven from the brand’s own recycled Primegreen fabric, the new road bike shoes aim for an affordable middle of the market, both in tech & price, featuring a lace-up design that harkens back to classic adidas soccer style.
Adidas The Road Cycling Shoes: a return to the road bike shoe
Arguably many modern cycling shoes have started to look quite similar, thanks to pared-down synthetic upper construction and the return of laces for light weight and simplicity. But the new lace-up football boots road shoes from adidas have the benefit of more that half a century of soccer shoes with their iconic three stripes to pull from.
In recent years we’ve seen some interesting cycling crossovers from adidas – like their collaborations with Colnago – but cycling-specific shoes have been limited to FiveTen, a brand they bought up back in 2011.
Lace-up, Greenweave – Tech details
But history & classic looks aside, these new adidas The Road Cycling Shoes are a totally modern pair of road cycling kicks. They feature a one-piece seamless synthetic woven upper made from recycled polyester that falls under adidas’ Primegreen eco material initiative. This new ‘Primeweave’ is said to be highly breathable, while offering plenty of structured support that conforms to the shape of your foot.
Aimed a hitting a reasonable balance of cost and performance, the Road Cycling Shoes get a glass-reinforced nylon composite sole (instead of the carbon soles of more expensive road shoes.) The 3-bolt road sole is said to still deliver a “stiff, responsive feel” while balancing all-day comfort. Non-replaceable molded rubber toe & heel tread blocks offer a bit of grip for the walk to & from your bike.
The shoes get bonded-on white reflective stripes, plus a reflective heel tab for low light visibility. The ‘lightweight jacquard woven upper’ features integral TPU heel & toe reinforcement to protect the Primeweave from scuffs.
Classic lace closure lets you fine tune fit over the “adaptive tongue construction”, and a molded internal heel cup holds your foot in place. Plus, an elastic loop will keep long laces out of your drivetrain.

The Adidas Road Cycling Shoes will be sold direct from adidas.com in limited markets starting December 1 for £130 / 146€.
The new road shoes are available in black or white, plus white reflective for the classic three stripes in either color.
