Back when we got a first look at the new Gustav & Greta city bikes last spring, Schindelhauer was already talking about the versatility of the haulers for families. Well they’ve taken that to the next step by working with Thule’s carriers to do extensive bike testing, certifying safe use with RideAlong kid seats and Chariot trailers.

Schindelhauer made a name for themselves over the last decade with simple, functional bikes and a fixed-gear aesthetic that surely appealed to the 20-something urban cyclist crowd. Well, they’re now urban 30-somethings and need to get the kids around town in style. And of course cyclist parents with young kids are going to be picky. So Schindelhauer took their durable and low-maintenance bikes and figured the best way to transport your kids in the city.
Schindelhauer Greta & Gustav fat tire city commuter bikes for families
While most of their bikes feature lightweight shaped alloy tubesets, the introduction of Gustav & Great earlier this year specifically highlighted the round seattubes needed to mount a kid’s seat. Notice how the dropped, step-through frame of the Greta looks perfectly sized to fit the Thule RideAlong.
That wasn’t an accident. The new bikes were engineered specifically to work with the industry benchmark Thule kid seats, and to pass testing with extra loading.
Schindelhauer Friedrich classic urban commuter bike for families
Besides the new fat tire city bikes, Schindelhauer’s Friedrich urban cruiser, with its own full fenders & minimal rear rack, also features a heavier round seattube. So they sent that bike off to the EFBE-Institute to get it shock-tested according to DIN EN 14344 – the child seat DIN standard. They say it passed without any issues, so now officially joins their Bikes for Families category (from size M/54cm and larger) and can be recommended with the Thule RideAlong or RideAlong Lite seats.
Also Schindelhauer tells us that all of their bikes with Shimano internally geared hubs are able to mount a Thule (or other) kid’s trailer thanks to their flat modular dropouts and the hitch adapters available with trailers like the Thule, Croozer & Burley models.
