HED Carbon Fiber tri-spoke fat bike wheelset with tubeless ready rim profiles

As we were perusing HED’s new Ardennes road wheels, a little birdy said we should ask about some crazy new carbon fiber fat bike wheels. Good thing we did!

Called H3, Steve Hed says they’ll save a ton of weight over traditional fat bike wheels and -wait for it- that they’ve been running them tubeless with as little as 10psi! Not many other details were given with these pictures he sent over, but they are real and they are likely headed for production. We asked about price, to which Hed replied “If you have to ask…” Basically they’ll be very expensive.

More as we get it, and another photo after the break…

Think they’ll look ridiculous on a steel fat bike? Get a carbon frame to go with them!

How to attach the disk rotor? Service hub?

10psi! Thats far too high of pressure if you are riding in snow.

Will they make 29ers?

The bead ramp is what has me interested…
Hub service is just like any other hub. And, yes 10 PSI is too high, but I take it that comment was made because they don’t understand fatbike (aka snowbike) pressure requirements, not because they couldn’t run it at lower pressures like 0.5, 1 and 2 psi needed for extreme snow expeditions. Also, the width looks a little narrow, so my initial impressions is that this will be more of a summer trail wheel set vs. a winter wheel where 80mm is a minimum width.

At least Lord of the Rings stayed true to the historical texts.

Anyone remember HED Stalingrad descending wheels? 😀

HED is based in Minnesota so I think they understand snow riding pressure. They said they can run “tubeless” as low as 10 psi. I dont think other fat bike setups are tubeless compatible. (tubes are about a pound each) And yes it is real including the 6 bold disk hub.

Can I get them with a Campy freehub body? These would work great on my EPS Moonlander.

I think a carbon wheel would be great. At speeds above 20 mph there is a strong gyro feel on fat bikes that needs to be fixed.
