Likely looking to spread their wings to the lucrative health and corporate organization markets, Polar is now making its API free to 3rd party developers. The move allows outside app and software developers to use, with your permission, your workout and daily activity info. Anything recorded by Polar’s wrist, chest or bike mounted sensors should be fair game, and we’re guessing sleep tracking data will be thrown into the mix, too.

Polar says it opens up opportunities for health insurance, corporate wellness programs and health clubs to offer personalized programs. Anyone with a Polar Flow account can download the Polar Open AccessLink and get started.

Too late to the game. They talked about doing this back in 2014 with the loop and m400 but it never happened. They lost tons of market share to Garmin and Fitbit who sync to insurance tracking.
