Officina Battaglin’s premier custom steel road bike gets a Power+ EVO evolution upgrade to become the one of the first steel bikes we’ve seen to adopt the modern clean lines of completely hidden, internal cable routing. Working with the new Deda DCR routing system and custom Italian steel tubing, the limited edition Power+ EVO integrates the electronic shift & brake routing inside the color-matched cockpit as cleanly as we’ve seen in any modern bike.

The Battaglin workshop first introduced their modern, lightweight steel Power+ road bike brazed in northern Italy from premier Columbus HSS oversized tubing back in 2014, giving it a disc brake version just two years ago. it has remained their best seller, mixing the classic ride of steel, the fully custom & personalized build process they are known for, all with the best performance you can get in a modern steel road bike.

Now the Power+ EVO takes it one step further, as Officina Battaglin worked closely with tubing supplier Columbus to create a lightweight, straight 1.5″ headtube in which they could fit the Deda Elementi DCR headset for a fully integrated cockpit with completely hidden, internal cable routing. It also required a custom Columbus carbon steerer for the fork and customized downtube to facilitate the smooth transition of the internal cables.

But the result is another impressive mix of classic style & modern details (much like their lugged steel, disc brake Portofino) to create a uniquely beautiful custom handmade Italian road bike – with no cables in sight.

Custom Tech Details

Like every bike they build, the new Power+ EVO is made-to-measure, with each buyer personally consulting on their bike fit & details with 1981 Giro-Vuelta double winner Giovanni Battaglin who oversees production. It’s a relatively time-intensive, individual process, and why Officina Battaglin will produce just 40 pieces of the new bike this year.

The Power+ EVO is available in standard or contemporary sloping geometries, with rim or disc brakes, and in custom paint or Battaglin’s deeps colored chrome cromovelato finishes. The one limitation is that you stick to wires or wireless electronic shifting (from any major drivetrain maker), as they want to ensure flawless shift performance through the internal routing installation.

Pricing & Availability

The new bike is available exclusively direct from Officina Battaglin to get that one-on-one experience. The Power+ EVO frameset isn’t cheap at 4000€, but besides the custom geometry and custom finish included in that price, Battaglin also includes the complete DCR cockpit with painted-to-match Deda Vinci stem & carbon handlebar, a limited edition number plate, and even you name engraved onto the bike if you want. (Color-matched seatposts are also possible.)

Battaglin will also help you source a complete bike build if you desire. Slots for the limited edition Power+ EVO are open now, with frameset turnaround starting from around 6 weeks after geometry, details & finishing are agreed.

Let’s hope the custom paint doesn’t include those hideous decals all over it! I can’t stand when bicycle designers feel it’s cool to write “evo” or “carbon” or whatever all over the bike. Looks sooooo cheap.

Thanks for the subjective commentary. Are there not enough tubeless posts for you to soapbox industry conspiracies to where you now have to armchair critique paint on a bike you’re not in the market for anyway? Must be tough to get out of bed everyday with all the ways bikes have done you wrong.

That’s just an annoying thing that for some reason Italian brands just love doing. I always see that and think the bike some weird form of turrets syndrome where it just yells random marketing inspired pseudoscience terms.

Well, I used to be quite tough on BR when they “test” something or copy paste manufacturers (even more if Specialized) Claims, having 0 critical-thinking… but to present new products they are good. Here that’s what they do: presenting an exclusive product without fuzz. I was not aware of this new product and it’s quite a beauty I am happy to discover!!

You’re new here, huh?

They’re likely going to delete your comment because a) it’s accurate or b) it’s critical of them. Pick your poison. Welcome to the land where journalistic integrity and the ability to accept criticism are long dead.

@Cory, I honestly applaud you not just deleting these comments, unlike many in the past. I’ve seen comments disappear that weren’t ill intentioned towards you so the default assumption on my part has become rather pessimistic. It’s a negative feedback loop. Thanks for breaking it.

That said, yeah, those graphics are kind of tacky for how nice the rest of the frame is. But, viva Italia! That’s how they do.

@Cory- I like Bikerumor and like your articles. This is a successful site, so I suspect that there are lots of people like me, and that we’re in the majority! I do think the main reason there is so much negativity on this site is that there is no accountability, apart from deletion of comments. There is no upvoting or downvoting like on sites that use Disqus.

It’s called BikeRumour, not BikeReview. Yes there are reviews on this site just as there are press releases. I visit this site daily to keep up with what’s new and am yet to find a better site that has this much info posted daily from around the world. Take any claims of stiffness and aero data with a grain of salt and I’m sure you’ll have a nice time.

Definitely not first but one of the few steel bikes to have fully internal routing.

It is very simple to do internal ruoting with Sram Etap.

Maybe it’s just me, but the name of this bike made me think e-bike, for some reason.

It’s beautiful!

so…internally wired and hosed, not internally cabled?

Interesting. While Battaglin showed this frame off as a sneak peek to its subscribers, I think I missed their indication that this bike is only for electronic shift drivetrains – wired or wireless.

The outgoing Power (which they are apparently no longer going to make) supported mechanical shifting.

i wonder how durable that cromovelato finish is, especially on carbon or aluminum parts

Internal cables have no real world advantage. But then neither does electronic shifting and people buy that….

People with hand size/strength issues often find electronic shifting to be easier than mechanical.

It may have no advantage for you. That’s fine. Other folks have different issues and priorities.

There’s real world advantage not having to maintain or replace standard cables. Perfect shifts every time, that’s also an advantage.

The advantage, imo, to internal cables are: a. Aesthetics b. If you have a trunk rack it doesnt mess up your cables c. If you have to shoulder your bike there is no cable d. There are more I’m hoing to bed

I’d like to know how that chromovelato (or similar finishes) looks after a year or two on the road. A finish like that could make me want a steel bike as opposed to a nude Ti frame.
