‘Twas the week before Ironman Kona and all through the beach, not a slipstream was stirring, not a banana out of reach…all thanks to a collection of new triathlon superbikes from Cube, Cervelo and BMC. The Cervelo P5X debuted as perhaps the wildest design, giving even the Diamondback Andean a run for its money. We rolled down to the local bike shop to get a closer look and actual weights on this one, too.
The new BMC Timemachine stuck to a more traditional design, hiding some very slick features in plain sight. Things like multiple seatpost positions (not saddle positions…the actual post can mount in different places on the bike) and V-shaped elbow rest platforms present a versatile, interesting aerodynamic story. And the Cube Project Kona Aerium C:68 borrowed from F1 to keep it slippery with a massive fairing and extension integration on the front end.
Decidedly not aero is a design study from MOEF to see if kids would be more likely to wear a helmet if they thought it was cool. And what’s cooler than Legos? Or, actually, Playmobil.
ENVE increased the diameter of their wide 60 Forty carbon rims for 29+, giving bike packers a super strong, lightweight option for their backcountry adventures. Speaking of which, Watts had a helluva adventure with Blackburn, getting away from Interbike’s demo days for a bit to suffer as only he can, and tell about it in explicit (literally and figuratively) language as only he can.
And then we get all the new drivetrain parts…
SRAM just kinda threw out there that they’d be shipping the WiFLi version of eTap earlier than expected, and our grins got about as wide as the new gearing options.
And assuming you don’t wanna have to shift that eTap (or Di2 or EPS) on your own, ProShift will automate it for you. Based on biometrics, it’ll shift when the time is right to keep your effort or cadence where you like it.
If you just want a different way of shifting things for yourself, we’ve finally got our hands on a real live set of Box Component’s PushPush shifter and 11-speed rear derailleur. Could these guys give the big drivetrain makers a run for their (your) money? Check out our first impressions here.
